I woke up early this morning with the expectation that I would do the same tomorrow, take my GRE, and have it over with (FINALLY).
A little thing called the weather had other plans. (See photo above).
Although technically my test center could still be open tomorrow morning, I am very doubtful.
So, if you, too, are taking the GRE soon, and are wondering "What happens if I get snowed in the day before the test?" - here you go.

1. Are you sure you're not taking the GRE?
Call your test center and see if they have planned to cancel your appointment. It's likely that if the storm is bad, there won't be anyone to pick up because they've already left the office. You can guesstimate that you probably won't be taking the GRE at this point.
You should also check out the Prometric website for severe weather alerts and a list of centers that have been temporarily closed. The site says that your test center should email you 24 hours before, if that is the case. In case you haven't received an email, send one immediately to the Prometric people at [email protected]. Don't call their 1-800 number unless you enjoy listening to a robot and her 2-minute ramble. I would use the word "Urgent" in your subject line, and remember to include your confirmation number.
** Let your mode of transport, if it's another person, know about your plans, too!
So now you know, one way or another, that you're not taking the GRE. What next? Here are some suggestions:

So now you know, one way or another, that you're not taking the GRE. What next? Here are some suggestions:
2. Enjoy the snow!
*Applies only to those who don't already see a lot of snow on a regular basis
3. Do what you've skipped out on studying for the GRE.
Like practicing guitar, or exercising. Or tending to plants.
4. Prepare the perfect cup of hot cocoa.
Or matcha milk, your choice.
5. Watch a documentary.
This Film is Not Yet Rated is good. I know I'm a little late to the bandwagon, but I'm currently watching Supersize Me.
Please refrain from watching The Secret. The intro is melodramatic and kind of eerie. Also, there are too many meta physicists and philosophers on the screen for comfort. Unless that is your thing.

6. Edit your resume/CV.
For the people who still want to be productive on your day off, edit your resume or CV! Those are two different things - a resume is short, maybe a page in length, that you show to employers. A CV is what you show to gain entry to grad schools and other academic positions. Check out cvmkr.com for an easy to create CVs.
7. Skype/Facetime with a loved one.
I just Facetime-d my mum who is halfway across the world in Malaysia. Apparently, the problem there is haze caused by volcanic ash residue in the air. I told her that our weather situations aren't much different, they're just a different color.
And above all, please stay safe (and warm!) while you wait for better weather conditions.
