Independent variable: n. the property of an event, object or person that is manipulated in an experiment
For example, in an experiment studying the effect of sleep deprivation on word recall, the independent (manipulated) variable would be "sleep deprivation," which in this case may be the number of hours of sleep a participant gets in one day. The dependent variable that is influenced by the independent variable (or at least, that hypothesis is tested), is "number of words recalled."
